A CO2 incubator is a basic piece of equipment in any laboratory involved in cultivation of in vitro cells. The culture bottles must be kept slightly opened in order to allow the penetration of CO2, and enable the formation of a bicarbonate - CO2 buffer system, which is the most common buffer system for tissue culture. Leakage of medium from the culture bottles, high humidity, suitable temperature, the water tray and the air flow, all form a fertile breeding ground for the development of contaminants in the incubator, which are liable to contaminate the tissue culture in all the semi-opened culture bottles. 

The usual way of contamination is a media spill from a contaminated cell culture during loading and unloading of the cabinet. These spills can contaminate the trays and the water reservoir. Mycoplasmas are known to survive a distinct time on smooth surfaces even after the spilled culture medium has dried out. More serious is a contamination of the water tank needed to control the moisture level. Mycoplasmas can survive and, as some experts assume, also grow in pure water.

As soon as contamination appears in the incubator, it is very difficult to eliminate it, and severe damage can be caused. Therefore, it is essential to systematically clean and disinfect the incubator. It is recommended to disinfect every 14 days, or once a month at the very least.

Also water baths are common sources of contamination in a cell culture lab which occurs when e.g. frozen cells are thawed or media bottles are warmed up.

Mycoplasma-ExS Spray

Traditional surface disinfection provides a temporary solution against microbial colonization. Disinfected surfaces eventually become re-contaminated however, diminishing the benefit of the initial disinfection.

Several studies have shown the ability of silver polymer-based disinfectants to efficiently reduce microbial populations on hard surfaces within minutes, increase the potential to interrupt cross-contamination, and thus also minimize the risk of spreading contamination within associated biological labs.

Mycoplasma-ExS Spray not only immediately disinfects the surface, but also provides long-term antimicrobial effects. Due to the innovative silver polymer-based technology, treated surfaces are coated with an invisible layer of silver ions, which continues to protect it against recurrence of contamination.

This new solution allows fast, simple and safe disinfection of all laboratory surfaces and apparatuses, including laminar flow hoods, incubators, work benches, cell storage boxes and liquid nitrogen containers – preventing mycoplasma and other bacterial contamination.

Mycoplasma-ExS is a non-irritant and non-corrosive solution that is free of alcohols and harmful volatile organic compounds (VOCs) such as aldehydes. Mycoplasma-ExS Spray is highly effective against a broad spectrum of unwanted microbes commonly found in biological labs and has been validated according EN 13697. Spore-EX Spray & Wipes

Aquaguard

The perfect solution for maintenance of water quality in ordinary water baths and CO2 incubators

The water in an incubator or a water bath is a major source of cell culture contamination, particularly with respect to mycoplasma contaminations, since mycoplasmas can survive in pure water.

Aquaguard-1, a non-volatile water stabilizer/cleaner, is extremely effective at maintaining the water quality in CO2 incubators (tray). In addition, it does not cause damage to the stainless steel of the incubator or any plastic interior, and it does not cause any skin irritation when used as recommended. It comes as concentrated ready-to-use solution.

Aquaguard-2 is intended for maintenance of water quality in ordinary water baths. The active ingredient in Aquaguard-2 is highly effective to prevent growth of unwanted microorganisms such as bacteria and fungi. It is non-volatile, non-irritant and non-corrosive. Aquaguard-2 is stable at high temperatures (100°C) and does not produce foam in circulating water baths. It comes as concentrated ready-to-use solution.
